Let’s be real: as a busy mom, finding the time and energy to make meals for your family can feel like a full-time job. Between juggling work, errands, and the kids’ activities, the last thing you want is to spend hours in the kitchen. Luckily, meal prep doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. With these creative and little-known hacks, you can simplify your routine, save time, and keep your family well-fed with minimal effort.
Forget traditional freezer meals—prep entire sheet pan dinners in advance! Lay out chopped vegetables and proteins on a baking sheet, freeze them flat, then transfer them to a bag once solid. When you're ready to cook, just dump everything back onto a sheet pan and roast it straight from the freezer!
Sure, you can freeze sauces and herbs in an ice cube tray, but have you tried freezing whisked eggs, caramelized onions, or mashed avocado with lime juice for instant meal components? Having ready-to-go eggs for omelets or softened onions for soups is a game-changer.
Blend fresh herbs, garlic, citrus zest, and olive oil into a thick paste and freeze in tablespoon portions or in your ice cube tray. These little cubes can be tossed into soups, stews, stir-fries, or even spread onto proteins before roasting to instantly boost flavor.
Instead of waiting until cooking time, toss your pre-chopped veggies and proteins in oil and seasonings before storing them. That way, when you're ready to cook, all you have to do is dump them in the pan. Bonus: the flavors marinate and intensify while they sit. A few extra minutes spent on one day will save you hours throughout the week, just double the recipe and knock it out.
Pre-fill a muffin tin with small portions of snacks—cheese cubes, nuts, fruit, yogurt, crackers—and keep it covered in the fridge. When your kids ask for a snack, just hand them the tray for an easy grab-and-go option that minimizes mess. Or use trail mix, popcorn, etc. The variety, novelty, and easy clean-up makes it fun an enjoyable for everyone.
Designate a shelf in your pantry for emergency meal kits—think shelf-stable pasta, canned sauce, frozen veggies, and protein like canned beans or vacuum-sealed chicken. On the busiest nights, you’ll have an instant dinner option ready to go with zero effort. One of our favorites is just keeping charcuterie board supplies around, that way anyone can throw it together.
Chop extra veggies like red onions, carrots, cucumbers, or jalapeños and store them in jars with a simple vinegar brine. They’ll stay fresh longer, and you’ll have a quick way to add flavor and crunch to tacos, salads, and sandwiches. These little crunchy treats pack a punch of flavor while reducing waste with the extended shelf life.
Use a foil or parchment paper divider in your slow cooker to cook multiple components at once. For example, cook shredded chicken on one side and seasoned potatoes on the other without flavors mixing. This way, you prep two meals in the same amount of time!
Meal prep is all about working smarter, not harder so you can focus on what really matters—spending time with your family. Try one or two of these unconventional hacks and see how much easier your weeknight cooking can be!
